少年牧真人的母亲葬身火海后，他随父亲与继母组成新家庭。深陷悲伤的真人阴郁孤僻，难以融入新环境。一次意外，他跟随一只会说话的苍鹭闯入废弃的神秘塔楼，却不料进入了奇幻的“亡灵世界”，开始了一场不可思议的冒险……影片片名致敬了小说家吉野源三郎在1937年发表的同名著书，但电影故事由宫崎骏原创。。胡八一为救大金牙，找到去过瓶山的陈瞎子请教千年内丹详情，却得知六翅蜈蚣早被鹧鸪哨所杀。失望之际又因为王胖子倒腾南海明珠而落入乔二爷陷阱，不得已下，摸金三人组出发前往湘西，途中遇到当代卸岭魁首花少爷。在花少爷的带领下，摸金组合进入瓶山地宫……。Two young men (Jon Cryer, Rick Stear) who have been friends since early childhood decide to go on a trip to find a third friend (Rafael Baez) who has long since disappeared. Stories they have heard indicate that the friend has been seen in an apparently rambling, incoherent state at Coney Island. Their trip leads them to a number of adventures involving the otherworld-like life...。
