寓居上海的李老先生，曾经参加北伐军，后因病辞去军职。抗日战争时期 ，其子国新继承父志，投笔从戎，不 幸负伤。经李老义子、名医陈时中悉 心治疗，不久伤愈。为庆贺国新康复 ，时中邀请国新和护士朱清华同去舞 场欢度新年。在舞场，清华遇幼时同 学阿莲，阿莲因养父逼迫，沦为舞女 。时国新和时中也认出阿莲原系旧时 邻家女，相见之下，互诉旧谊。不久 ，阿莲因不堪养父虐待，潜逃至清华 家避居。幸由李老出资调停，阿莲遂 与养父断绝关系，而随清华学医。。The plot introduces us to a psychologist who suggests to three couples that they engage in a group session, where they will have to analyse each other without her being present.
