为了探明日本列岛一系列的异常地壳运动情况，地球物理学者田所雄介博士（小林桂树 饰）与助手幸长信彦（泷田裕介 饰）乘坐小野寺俊夫（藤冈弘 饰）驾驶的潜艇出海考察。在小笠原群岛附近的海沟处，海底莫名其妙的乱泥流令博士忧心忡忡。经过对各方材料缜密慎重的调查，田所博士作出一个震惊全国乃至世界的预测“由于地球变动，日本即将在两年之内完全沉入海底”。他的预测起初并未得到政府的完全信任，然而在此之后各地强烈地震相继爆发，休灭火山也重新喷发，事态正以出乎意料的速度恶化。在这个与世隔绝的岛国，人民陷入前所未有的疯狂之中…… 本片根据小松左京的同名原作改编。。Two women flee into the New Mexican desert to escape the clutches of an insidious cult.
